The French luxury fashion house Givenchy has long been synonymous with avant-garde haute couture and ready-to-wear collections that dazzled on the runway, the red carpet, and on the silver screen, too. Who could forget Audrey Hepburn’s now-iconic "little black dress" from Breakfast at Tiffany’s in 1961, designed by Hubert de Givenchy himself?

Over the decades, the Maison has expanded its line and gradually shifted focus toward designing luxurious handbags that are deemed ahead of their time. From unique dimensional silhouettes and clean lines to sleek yet chic designs, Givenchy has consistently delivered—under the vision of genius maestros—a treasure trove of iconic handbags that have become timeless fixtures in fashion history. And yes, one of them is the one and only… Givenchy Antigona.

Here's what you need to know about Givenchy’s signature handbag.

Antigona’s Anatomy

Black Givenchy Antigona Bag

The Givenchy Antigona handbag was first launched in the Fall/Winter 2011 collection under the creative direction of Riccardo Tisci. After nearly a decade without a cult-status hit handbag, the French brand needed a standout—and who better to deliver it than Tisci?

Designed in a structured yet smooth trapezoid shape, the iconic tote comes with clean, rounded lines. Made of calfskin or grained goatskin leather, Antigona’s minimalist silhouette is elevated by a pentagonal patch with a silvery debossed GIVENCHY signature. But what truly made it stand out is its boxy yet roomy interior completed with two interior slip pockets and a zipped compartment.

The strong top handles also gave it the practical yet chic façade, while the addition of an adjustable, removable shoulder strap made it versatile enough for crossbody wear. Finished with silvery-finish hardware and the signature GIVENCHY 4G zipper pull, the Antigona handbags exude perfect blend of structure, polish, yet utilitarian edgy – even 14 years after its initial inception.

From Greek Mythology to Celebrity’s Favourites…

The name Antigona pays homage to Antigone, a Greek mythological figure known for her strength and defiance. Tisci aimed to blend these masculine and feminine codes and translate that tension to life through bold zippers, a sharp leather patch, and industrial metal touches — all balanced by a sleek, refined silhouette.

The coveted bag was further catapulted into the fashion spotlight when it became a go-to piece for Hollywood’s elite. From Beyoncé to Charlize Theron and Kim Kardashian, A-listers gravitated toward its polished yet practical appeal — available in multiple sizes and finishes, from timeless black leather to wild animal prints.

Antigona’s Spin-offs

Given Antigona’s cult status, it didn’t take long for Givenchy to start reimagining its signature handbag. In 2020, the Maison gave it a fresh twist with the launch of the Antigona Soft for its Pre-Fall collection. Still carrying the original DNA, this version relaxed the silhouette and added two leather side bands with twist clasps, letting you cinch or loosen the sides depending on your vibe.

The eponymous bag then continued getting several spin-offs, from the Antigona Lock to the Antigona Stretch. In 2024, Givenchy then introduced a brand new Antigona Cube, featuring a symmetrical and three-dimensional shape which looked like an ice cube. This version also says goodbye to the trapezoid shape and welcomes a square form along with a shorter double-handle, allowing a pendular hand-carry.

But that’s not all — there’s also a more party-ready Antigona East‑West satchel. With its long, horizontal silhouette, origami-style gussets, and signature pentagonal patch, it’s the cool, compact sibling of the classic. Available in mini and small sizes, the East-West satchel comes in leather or laminated leather with a shiny, shimmery, mirror-like finish. Making it the perfect accessory for nights out.

Whether it’s a hectic workday or a laid-back weekend, Givenchy’s classic Antigona remains a staple for any occasion. Find yours today, only at MAYFEYR.
