If you have seen a Missoni dress, you would know that the luxurious Italian brand has distinct, eye-catching zigzag patterns that have long been considered a symbol of status among fashion lovers. But their patterns alone are not the reason why Missoni has become one of the most sought-after fashion brands in the world since the '50s.

Missoni gained its well-deserved global fame by introducing innovative knitwear with colourful and striking designs. Blending meticulous craftsmanship with rich fabrics, the fashion house takes bohemian elegance to a whole new level with its famed Missoni knitted dresses, sweaters, cardigans, among a mélange of gorgeous knitwear that can be worn all year round.

But did you know that the fashion house also had a close relationship with sportswear and beachwear? Besides that, Missoni also engineered its own textiles. This means the brand didn't just design its own clothes, but also pioneered the use of advanced knitting machines back in the '60s.

Over the years, the cult-status brand also expanded into homeware and interior design collections with the revered Missoni Home, as well as a fragrance line, and rounded it off with a blossoming hospitality business with Missoni Resort Club. The latter can be found in several lavish locations, such as Mykonos, Bali, and Ibiza.

So, having built this fabulous lifestyle and fashion empire, how did this Italian brand start out and achieve such tremendous success?

Missoni History: Knitwear Goldmine

The once family-owned brand (now owned entirely by FSI & Katjes Quiet Luxury in 2026) was founded by a newlywed husband and wife with an interesting history.

In 1953, former Olympic athlete Ottavio "Tai" Missoni met his future wife, Rosita Jelmini, and together they turned their shared passion for textiles and designs into a fashion empire. In the early days, the couple set up a small knitwear workshop in the basement of their house in Gallarate and produced jersey suits for gymnastics and athletics teams. This part of their history is particularly important as it marked the beginning of the brand's identity.

The creative duo then found their secret to success in knitwear products. Back in the '50s, knitwear fashion items were not as popular as they are today, and knitting was still considered a hobby you did at home. But as the economy boomed and more career women sought comfortable workwear, Ottavio and Rosita started designing colourful knitted separates: think matching sweaters, tops, skirts, and trousers.

Understanding this new fashion demand, the Missonis began catering to these young women with knitwear designed with unique patterns, high-quality fabrics, and meticulous craftsmanship, which over time proved to be a hit. The first Missoni dress was even displayed in the windows of the La Rinascente department store in Milan in 1958, helping the brand gain recognition during the rise of the ready-to-wear era, as reported by Another Mag.

In the '60s, Missoni further gained popularity when the brand was featured in the US Vogue by its famed editor, Diana Vreeland. The magazine's support in particular helped Missoni get wider recognition. But nothing compared to its 1967 fashion show, where the brand sent a slew of models braless down the runway in sheer tops, that placed Missoni at the forefront of the fashion zeitgeist, according to The Guardian.

Following this success, Missoni expanded its business and launched its very own fragrance in 1982, Missoni Home in 1983, and Missoni Sport in 1985, according to British Marie Claire. The family-owned brand stayed strong throughout many decades, proving that its success was here to stay.

Speaking of her parent’s pioneering history, Angela Missoni shared with Vogue a heartwarming memory: "My mother was equal parts creative visionary and fearless leader. She had the determination to make things happen and, together with my father, changed the course of fashion. She brought this same energy to every part of our family life—she showed us how to live life in colour and created a Missoni lifestyle long before the term lifestyle brand was coined.”

The Missoni Dresses & Signature Patterns

Renowned for its memorable zigzag patterns, also called chevron patterns, the brand's iconic signatures were actually created on the Raschel warp-knitting machine. These machines were previously used by local mills in Lombardy, Italy, to weave arabesque shawls, and the Missonis modified them to produce vibrant, flame-stitch textiles that quickly revolutionised knitwear.

Introduced in 1962, the brand's zigzag patterns made their first official runway appearance in the Fall/Winter 1967 collection, where the lightning-bolt shapes captured the attention of fashionistas of the era.

But, did you know that Missoni's colourful geometric patterns were also influenced by modern art movements, such as Italian Futurism, and artists like Sonia Delaunay? Today the Missoni’s zigzag patterns had been renewed and reinterpreted through various forms, including pixelated forms, lame viscose, and sequined variations.

While the zigzag patterns appeared on almost every item they created, none showcased the gorgeous patterns better than Missoni dresses. From maxi to midi and knit dresses, there is a variety of types, designs, and styles for every woman.

The quintessential Missoni dress also featured flattering knits, where Missoni's artisanal tailors wove different threads, such as rayon, wool, cotton, and metallic fibres, into the fabric, allowing it to beautifully hug the body without feeling stiff or heavy.

But, don’t dismiss Missoni for only making bohemian dresses, as the brand is also known for its versatile fashion staples. From evening gowns that include gorgeous viscose lamé and ombré lurex materials that you can wear to formal events like galas or charities, Missoni is also celebrated for its beachwear and vacation dresses. Think breezy kaftans and cover-ups with kimono silhouettes or open backs that you will find work perfectly as resort wear.

If you're looking for the perfect Missoni accessories, then look no further than their signature scarves and foulards. Missoni knit scarves boast the brand's famous zigzag motif and come with fringes, sequins, or ribbed edges. Meanwhile, the brand's foulards are made from pure silk and feature printed logo lettering, making them the perfect summer accessories for your travels.

Celebrity Fans & Missoni Today

Throughout the years, the Missoni brand has undergone a couple of changes in leadership. While the Missonis' three children: Angela, Luca, and Vittorio had worked in the family business for years, they were involved in the creative side, the brand's marketing, and the Missoni Home line.

But in 2026, as reported by Business of Fashion, the Missoni family sold its remaining stake in the company to FSI, a Milan-based private equity fund. The recent changes, however, have brought some good news, as the Italian brand returned to profitability with reported revenues of €130 million, according to Reuters.

Where does Missoni stand today? The fashion house recently unveiled its much-praised Fall Ready-to-Wear 2026 collection, designed by creative director Alberto Caliri. Perfect for the upcoming season, the new collection features new layers of knitwear, from gorgeous fall coats to oversized shoulders as an homage to the '80s.

Focusing on rich fall colours like warm browns, muted greys, and light pastels, they also cleverly play with textures, fabrics, and patterns, including stripes, sequins, and tartans, all showcased in a true minimalist fashion.

While the brand has seen some changes, there's no denying that Missoni is still a beloved fashion label with a strong celebrity following. Remember when superstar Beyoncé wore its famous silver metallic dress on stage during her legendary Renaissance World Tour? Or when Kerry Washington and British singer Dua Lipa sported Missoni's iconic dresses and knitwear?

There is also no shortage of Missoni pieces making their way onto Hollywood's big and small screens. From Rachel Chu's memorable vibrant Missoni dress in Crazy Rich Asians (2018) to Miranda's jacket from the Fall 2003 collection in the original Sex and the City, and Carrie Bradshaw donning a metallic lamé long cardigan in the sequel, And Just Like That... Missoni pieces always stand out with their showstopping designs and soft glamour style.
