Why do we see so many skirts around during the summer season? While skirts are a great, polished fashion staple on their own, they are also incredibly comfortable to wear when it gets hot out, mostly thanks to their breathable fabrics, making them the perfect summer item. Of course skirts have naturally evolved over the decades, but over the last few years we have seen a huge surge becoming popular way beyond seasonal.

In the 80s, trendy skirts were mostly defined by a rigid aesthetic that was synonymous with power dressing and fitness trends, featuring bold and structured silhouettes. But with the arrival of the 90s, skirt trends shifted into a more relaxed and minimalist style. And let's not forget that many looks were also inspired by the grunge aesthetic, which made plaid and tartan skirts so overwhelmingly popular during the decade.

But post-millennium, we then see a change in skirts’ sizes and designs. From playful to chaotic aesthetics, the 2000s skirt trends were largely remembered for their micro-mini skirts that got even more popular when Y2K pop queens and style icons like Paris Hilton, Britney Spears, and Christina Aguilera were spotted regularly in them. Major fashion houses also helped cement them, notably with Tom Ford driving the trend by sending ultra-short skirts down his runways during his era at Gucci.

However, with the arrival of the 2010s, skirts were slowly replaced by athleisure. Remember those black leggings that were everywhere during that decade? While certain skirt styles were still being worn, like the heavily trending peplum skirt, traditional options took a backseat to comfort.

So, what sparked the sudden craze back to skirts and what are the latest trends you can rock this summer? Here’s everything to know.

Resurgence of Skirts: The Post-Pandemic Beloved Staple

It’s interesting to notice that many fashion trends had a comeback or a resurgence during post-pandemic, and the rage behind skirts is definitely on that list. When the world was shut down and most of us were in our sweatpants and such, post-pandemic fashion had a reality check. It’s a clear sign that people are looking for breezier and more comfortable clothing pieces post-pandemic and skirts provided just that compared to athleisure or denim jeans.

But it’s also worth noting that the rise of skirts reflects the need for nostalgia, which we can clearly see as the one true staying trend post-pandemic. From handbags to shoes and, yes, skirts, more and more people—especially TikTok users and Gen Z—were looking for inspiration from the early 90s and noughties.

This nostalgic boom gave many designers a new opportunity to design and bring their own unique twists and vision to the ever-popular skirts. And one brand in particular took the chance and reaped all the benefits: the viral mini skirt by Miu Miu that was responsible for giving birth to this skirt mania.

During their Spring/Summer 2022 runway show, visionary designer Miuccia Prada showcased an ultra-low-rise, micro-length pleated skirt set on the runway that completely reshaped women's fashion trends. The result? Everyone across the globe went gaga over it, especially on social media and we even saw them on A-list celebrities like Nicole Kidman, Emma Corrin, and Zendaya, according to Australia’s Marie Claire. And yes, there was even a meme for it.

While we have since said goodbye to ultra miniskirts (though they are still in style!), the recent skirt trends are definitely interesting, blending that same Y2K energy with a much more playful, bolder, yet still elegant upgrade.

First up are bubble skirts, which have experienced a major revival over the past few years. If you are having a bit of fashion deja vu, you are totally excused, as we have seen these balloon-hem silhouettes grace numerous fashion runways from Khaite to Marc Jacobs, Alaïa, and Chloé, giving a vibrant new energy to the classic piece.

But did you know that this bulbous volume was actually rooted in 50s couture and gained popularity back in the 80s, when it was worn by the late Princess Diana and supermodel Naomi Campbell? The 2026 bubble skirt trends, however, are being explored in various lengths, from mini to below-the-knee, and are given a melange of additional elements: from bohemian to clean looks, the latter of which was seen in Prada’s black bubble mini skirts, as reported by Vogue Arabia.

The next trend is drop-waist skirts, also known as low-rise skirts, which are a bit more daring but offer a completely electric silhouette. Inspired by 1920s designs, drop-waist skirts feature a waistline that is dropped down to the hips, giving way to floaty, voluminous shapes.

Championed by several fashion brands, from Chanel to Tory Burch and Miu Miu, drop-waist skirts are definitely having a moment. The elongated silhouette visually lengthens the torso while offering a leaner, more svelte figure. This type of skirt is also incredibly versatile; you can wear it to both formal and casual events, as the upper portion keeps things sleek and structured, while the bottom remains fun and playful.

If you’re looking for a more unique skirt to flaunt this summer, there’s nothing better than the sheer and lace overlays that have been everywhere this year. From Coachella to streetwear fashion, sheer and lace skirts have been getting so much love thanks to their everyday wearability.

Luxury brands are also embracing the translucent aesthetics, from Fendi to Prada, which means you have plenty of options to choose from. Modern updates have given them clever layered elements like opaque, built-in shorts, bodysuits, or even hot pants that make them a must-have staple. And let’s not forget that sheer and lace skirts are the best summer companions, as the lightweight fabrics are inherently breathable while still giving off elegant and mysterious vibes.

Last but not least, the 2026 skirt trends have also seen many fashionistas donning tactile and sophisticated pleated skirts. A part of the statement-skirt family, pleated skirts provide graceful fluid movement and rich texture, which creates a high-powered visual that elevates even the simplest outfits.

Perhaps it is also thanks to the #PoetCore aesthetic that has been trending, making pleated skirts a perfect fit for those who want to exude a more literary and romantic style (we see you!).

Whether in a midi or maxi length, as seen from brands like Max Mara and Dior, pleated skirts are also an ideal choice for any body type. The flattering silhouette gently defines the waist and skims over the hips, creating a beautiful A-line shape that will make anyone feel confident stepping out in them. So, what’s not to love?

How to Style Them?

While we have shared the current trends and fun, detailed history of skirts, we will not leave you hanging without giving you some styling tips, now would we?

For the bubble skirt enthusiast, you can always remind yourself of this mantra: do not go overboard. Since the balloon skirt is already the centre of attention, pairing it with a simple tank top (as seen in Gen Z superstar Olivia Dean above) and a cardigan or blazer will give you that exact cool girl polished look.

While drop-waist skirts are 1920s-inspired, you can always pair them with 90s aesthetics. Yes, we are talking about the preppy looks that you can achieve by pairing it with knit polos, crisp button-downs, or even structured vests. Always remember to tuck in your tops to keep the focus on the low-waist silhouette. If you’re going for a casual vibe, you can keep it simple with a sleeveless top.

Now, there is a more fun styling approach for sheer or lace skirts. Since transparent fabrics already give off an avant-garde, dreamy look, you can ground them with structured outerwear, including oversized blazers, leather jackets, and yes even cosy sweaters. If you want to up your fashion game, take some streetwear inspiration and wear your sheer skirt over fitted pants or tailored trousers.

For pleated skirts, the soft and feminine silhouette demands a contrast pairing, whether it’s crisp blouses, a leather jacket, knit turtlenecks, or animal-print tops. This team-up will give your pleated skirt a more balanced look for fluid movement.
